How to Switch From Medisafe to MedRemind in Five Minutes

Before you start

Have your current Medisafe app open on the same device, and your physical medication bottles nearby. This takes about five minutes for a typical regimen of three to six medications.

Step-by-step

  1. Open Medisafe. Go to Settings and find the medication list. Take a screenshot or export to PDF if Medisafe offers it on your tier.
  2. Install MedRemind. Sign in or skip sign-in; local mode works for this setup.
  3. Scan or search. For each medication in the screenshot, either tap the camera icon and scan the bottle, or use the + button to search the catalog. Scanning is faster if you have the bottle.
  4. Set the schedule. Copy the times from Medisafe. If a medication was "as needed" in Medisafe, use the same custom schedule in MedRemind.
  5. Confirm the interaction report. MedRemind runs the interaction check as you add each medication. Read the report once at the end to make sure nothing unexpected appears.
  6. Enable Privacy Mode. If your phone is ever visible to others, toggle Privacy Mode in Settings. Medisafe does not have an equivalent, so this is something you gain on the move.
  7. Retire Medisafe. Leave Medisafe installed for a week as a backup. Once you have seen MedRemind fire correctly for a full cycle (7 days typically), delete Medisafe.

What carries over and what does not

  • Carries over manually: medication names, strengths, schedules, reminder times.
  • Does not carry over automatically: your dose log history from Medisafe. If you want a continuous history, export the Medisafe log to PDF and keep it as a record.
  • Better in MedRemind: interaction warnings (free, not behind premium), prescription scanning, offline drug encyclopedia, privacy mode, injection site rotation.
  • Better in Medisafe: Apple Watch complication, established public community, longer track record.

Common switch-over mistakes

  • Forgetting an as-needed medication. PRN medications (pain relievers, inhalers, rescue meds) are easy to skip because they have no fixed reminder. Add them anyway so the interaction checker sees them.
  • Mismatching strengths. Scan the bottle to avoid retyping "37.5 mg" as "37 mg".
  • Deleting Medisafe too early. Keep it for a week so you can verify MedRemind's reminders fire as expected.

After the switch

Two things to check within 48 hours: the first reminder fires correctly, and the interaction report is clean. If the first reminder does not fire, check Android or iOS notification permissions and battery-optimization settings for MedRemind. Background-notification reliability is the single most common source of missed reminders on Android.

Frequently asked questions

Will MedRemind fire reminders while Medisafe is still installed?

Yes. Both apps schedule their own notifications; they do not interfere with each other.

What if my regimen is complex (tapering, every-other-day, cycles)?

MedRemind supports custom schedules including tapering and cycles. The setup takes a bit longer but the result is accurate.

Can I keep using Medisafe for caregivers and MedRemind for myself?

You could, but you lose the benefit of the interaction checker seeing the full list in one place. Better to move everyone to one app.

Is there a data migration tool?

Not yet. A one-click migration is on the roadmap. For now the manual copy is the reliable path.

Where MedRemind beats the category

Safety features that should never sit behind a paywall are free here, and the tools that usually require a separate specialty app are built in.

Scan instead of typing. The camera reads the bottle label or the box barcode and fills the form. Medisafe, MyTherapy, Pillo, Dosecast, Round Health and MedTimer do not ship this.

Drug interactions, free and offline. Six severity levels, runs on the device in airplane mode. Medisafe paywalls its version. MyTherapy, Pillo, Dosecast and MedTimer do not have one at all.

Offline drug encyclopedia. The full FDA label and Spain's CIMA registry ship inside the app. No competing reminder app bundles a drug reference; the rest fetch from the network or skip it.

GLP-1 and insulin injection rotation plus the full vitals stack. A body-map tracks each injection site. Glucose (manual or Bluetooth meter), blood pressure, weight, SpO2, heart rate and temperature all live on the same timeline as your medications. Pair a Bluetooth glucometer or cuff, sync through Health Connect, or type the values on a large clear keyboard. Clinical CSV export for the visit. Specialty apps like Shotsy do rotation alone. Nobody else in the reminder category brings vitals, CGM and dosing into one screen.

Three-level caregiver access. View, log or edit, with QR and 6-digit invite codes, SMS consent, and separate profiles for dependents and pets. Medisafe has a caregiver mode without this granularity. The others barely have a caregiver flow at all.

Lock-screen privacy mode. Two notification channels hide medication names until the phone is unlocked. Nobody else in the category has this.

A free tier that is actually free. No two-medication cap (Medisafe), no paywall on interaction warnings (Medisafe), no ads in the experience (Mango Health), no cloud-sync fee (Dosecast).
